Leroy Brown

Leroy Brown was born and raised in Natchez, Mississippi. After graduating high school and completing one semester of community college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he went to MCRD San Diego in December 2000. Brown’s artistic birth began in elementary where he drew faces on loose leaf notebook paper using only a No. 2 pencil. Throughout his military career, he honed his artistic skills by independently putting himself in areas where there was art. He served as an 0111 Personnel Administrator in Okinawa, Japan; Beaufort, South Carolina; New Orleans, Louisiana; (Special Duty Assignment as Drill Instructor) Parris Island, South Carolina; Tampa, Florida; Iwakuni, Japan; and Quantico, Virginia where he retired after honorably serving twenty years. He also served overseas in the Middle East and several Pacific countries. In 2008, Brown met Hank Herring, who was an influence, guide, and mentor who encouraged him to pursue his dream and to never put down the brush.

Working in mainly acrylics, Brown’s evolution into the fine arts allowed him to inspire others to pursue their passion as he was simultaneously pursuing while serving his country. His use of folk art through the vivid colors and movement portrays real life memories at an instant glance. Leroy Brown’s inspiration comes from just that…..inspiring people. “I want the world to have that same feeling. I get my greatest fulfillment from when a person can express themselves and how they feel from the vibes of my artwork.”

Brown’s work has been exhibited in galleries in South Carolina and Virginia and has created a trail throughout the United States. Press and media coverage include various podcasts, Real Talk TV, InsideNova newspaper, At Ease magazine, Rooted Magazine, Channel 7 ABC WJLA, and DCW50 Living Local DMV.
