Mission Belonging Awarded VA Suicide Prevention Grant
Grant supports local suicide prevention efforts for Veterans and their families.
Community Building Art Works is proud to announce that we will be working with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program to prevent Veteran suicide.
CBAW recently received a grant from the VA to support its mission through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP), a three-year program that provides funding to community-based organizations with innovative ideas for preventing Veteran suicide.
“It is an incredible honor and responsibility to be invited to join these efforts. No Veteran should bear the burden alone,” said Seema Reza, CEO and Co-Founder of Community Building Art Works. With the SSG Fox SPGP, we plan to launch a virtual outreach program focused on women Veterans by providing a healthy, connected, and diverse group of women Veterans, coming together through writing and art. More information on the SSG Fox SPGP can be found at www.mentalhealth.va.gov/ssgfox-grants/.
If you are a woman Veteran interested in participating in this program, please take this short survey to give us your feedback as we plan for VA Suicide Prevention Grant programming.

Supporting Afghan Refugee Combat Women Veterans
In partnership with Honor The Promise, Community Building Art Works had the immense honor to support the AllTru Gather Event 2022 held this past weekend in honor of those who lost their lives in the Global War on Terror.
CBAW offered a virtual writing program and in-person art making workshop to bring together American and Afghan Special Operations Forces (SOF) members to both inspire conversation and strengthen the mentor and mentee relationship as they explored home and journey. They were invited to use a paper mask as a canvas for a self-portrait through the landscapes of their collective and individual journeys. In creating this piece of work, these women considered the journey of where they come from, where they are today, and where they hope to be.

Through Our Eyes: Military Teen Photo Exhibit Gallery
Military Teens create a special photo exhibit showcasing the experience of a family military move across the country.
On October 2nd, Community Building Art Works and Blue Star Families had the honor of presenting a special art exhibit featuring the work of military teenagers at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia.
Each year 600,000 military family members change duty stations, leaving behind support networks, community resources, and homes. 80% of military children of active duty members attend public schools throughout the United States–entering communities with little, if any, understanding of their particular challenges.
Through Our Eyes: Finding Home Again is an exhibit by high school students from military families. Through photographs and captions, they tell the stories of their transitions to the National Capital Region during the summer of 2022.
This exhibit features the work of Military Teens describing their experiences in images and words of relocating and “Finding Home Again” in this process. With work that answers such questions as “What Does Saying Goodbye” and “What Does Saying Hello” look like, join us on the journey and also see stops along the way. A moving exhibit for anyone who has relocated often or who is seeking to find home again.
It was an amazing day and we were so thrilled to be there in person with these young artists and their families. Below are some photos from the exhibit opening and reception.
If you are in the DC Metro area, stop by and check out this special showing. The exhibit is open at the Torpedo Factory through November 6th. Click here for the official Torpedo Factory exhibit page. The Torpedo Factory also has a special Late Shift Masquerade event coming up on October 14th. Get more details on those activities by clicking here.
